Ambitious plans to redevelop one of Donegal’s best known hotels, Óstán Ghaoth Dobhair, have been given the green light this week.

Donegal County Council has given the go-ahead for the proposed development which will include a 250 seater wedding venue/ballroom on the roof of the current hotel.

Eighty new bedrooms will also be constructed where the old ballroom was located as well as 15 two-bedroom apartments and a new spa.

A spokesman for Vesada, the new owner of the hotel, said work would begin within nine months of planning permission being granted and that construction would take up to a year. The company is also currently redeveloping the nearby Seaview Hotel – both projects will cost around €15 million.

He also stressed both hotels would be reopened as tourist and wedding venues, and not as International Protection Centres for accommodating refugees and asylum seekers.

“We will definitely not be building a new 250 seater wedding venue and spa in order to accommodate International Protection Applicants,” the spokesman stressed.
