Lough Swilly RNLI volunteers have been praised for their quick efforts to help a fisherman suffering chest pains while out at sea.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when Malin Head Coast Guard alerted the RNLI to the situation near Rathmullan Pier. A passing boat had spotted the fisherman in distress and raised the alarm.
The Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboat crew launched in less than four minutes.
Upon reaching the fisherman, the crew administered first aid and made the decision to escort the vessel to Fahan Marina, where an ambulance was waiting. The fisherman was safely transferred to the paramedics, and the RNLI crew then proceeded to Buncrana Pier to refuel and prepare for future calls.
Joe Joyce from Lough Swilly RNLI was full of praise for the multiagency response yesterday afternoon. “Everyone involved yesterday deserves great credit” he stated. “The passing fisherman acted very quickly contacting the Coast Guard and our crew managed to launch in under 4 minutes from the time the pagers went off which is a fantastic response from our volunteers. And then to have an ambulance at the marina waiting on him was brilliant. Everyone at the station wishes him a speedy recovery”.
Remember if you’re in difficulty in or on the water or see someone in trouble, please dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
