A charity golf classic is set to tee off this Friday, September 27th, at the Bundoran Golf Club, with fantastic prizes on offer.
It will be a day of friendly competition raising vital funds for three local organisations: the Nemo Special Olympics Sports Club, the Donegal Bay Community First Responders, and Donegal Down Syndrome.
Nemo Special Olympics Sports Club has been developing from strength to strength since 2011 for people with intellectual disabilities. The club started as a swim club, based firstly in Ballyshannon Leisure Centre and now training out of Finn Valley Leisure Centre, Stranorlar, to help cover all surrounding areas of Donegal and Fermanagh. The club is based on volunteer qualified swim coaches.
The success of the swim club continues to increase in athlete numbers both competitive and non-competitive swimmers with ID. Dry-fit exercise programmes are now added into the athletes’ weekly programme to continue strength and conditioning.
Nemo SOSC has started a Special Olympics Young Athletes Programme to help develop young people (ages 4-12 yrs) with intellectual disabilities with Fundamental Movement Skills. This is new to the Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Belleek, Kinlough area with a vision of increasing the numbers and creating more sessions in areas around Donegal.
Donegal Bay Community First Responders was established in order to provide a volunteer community rapid response to actual or potentially life-threatening emergencies in the Ballyshannon, Bundoran & surrounding areas in counties Donegal & Leitrim. Donegal Bay CFR was established in September 2017 and three local CFR Teams went ‘live’ with the National Ambulance service in May 2018.
Donegal Bay Community First Responder group is linked to the National Ambulance Service’s National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC). On-call volunteer community responders are activated by Ambulance Control following a 999 call from members of the public. Its aim is to reach a potential life-threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives & to assist the ambulance crew upon arrival. The primary role is to help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care including defibrillation, until the more highly skilled ambulance crew arrives on the scene to take over the treatment.
