Residents of Oldtown in Letterkenny were jolted awake today when several fireworks were let off before dawn.
The disturbance was reported in the residential area at around 6am.
A local resident told Donegal Daily that they were startled by five or six loud bangs.
“We could see the red flashes out the window. Not only are they so dangerous, I can’t understand why someone would do it at that hour of the morning,” they said.
Residents have also reported hearing fireworks across other parts of Letterkenny nightly since Friday.
As Halloween approaches, gardaí will be reinforcing the message that fireworks are illegal in the Republic of Ireland.
It’s an offence for anyone to possess fireworks without a licence. Igniting illegal fireworks, throwing an ignited firework at a person or property and possessing illegal fireworks with intent to sell or supply are all offences.
Fines of up to €10,000 and five years imprisonment are applicable to those found guilty of lighting, throwing or being in possession of fireworks.
Anyone with information about the sale or supply of illegal fireworks should contact their local garda station, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800666111.
