There was a great turnout in Buncrana on Friday evening as artists, writers and singers performed to show solidarity with Palestine.
The event was organised by well-known local music teacher and songwriter Bernie Doherty at the Exchange in Buncrana, and supported as part of Donegal’s Culture Night activities.
It provided an opportunity for the community to come together in solidarity against the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
“It was a chance for writers, artists, singers and everyone else to come together in solidarity with the Palestinian people in this ongoing horror they are living through,” organisers from the Inishowen Palestine Solidarity Campaign said.
Stories, poems and songs from Gaza were performed, as well as a number of original creations from the artists at the event also.
“The murder of artists in air strikes and the deliberate destruction of Palestinian cultural heritage by Israel has been happening too and was the focus of this night. Artists of all kinds have been targeted, imprisoned, tortured and murdered.”
“In words and images, these voices from Palestine are urging the world to demand a permanent ceasefire, to hold Israel accountable for its war crimes and to work for a solution that brings peace, justice and safety to all people living in the region.”
A total of €476 was also raised on the night through a raffle and donations, to be dedicated to displaced civilians in the Al Mawasi refugee camp who are facing severe food shortages in intolerable conditions.
“We thank everyone who came, who performed, who organised, who donated,” organisers said.
“It showed that people care here in Buncrana, as they do all over the world, about the genocide, the war crimes, the awful slaughter of Palestinian children, women and men of all ages, the destruction of not just Gaza civilian infrastructure, but now increasingly of the West Bank too.”
