St Michaels 2-08 v 0-13 Kilcar
Another one of the Championship favourites has been knocked out as the surprises keep coming in the Donegal Senior Football Championship Quarter-Finals.
Today it was St Michaels who played spoiler for one of the title favourites, as they pulled off a stunning 7-point comeback to beat Kilcar this afternoon.
Despite St Michaels being undefeated in four games in the Group Stage, Kilcar were still heavily favoured – and the game for large parts followed that script, with Kilcar entering the half-time break ahead by seven points, a dominating scoreline of 0-09 to 0-02 in their favour.
However, Kilcar would only score four more times in this Quarter-Final contest that turned on a dime after the break.
Kilcar were awarded a penalty just minutes into the second half, but Patrick McBrearty was unable to convert due to a superb save from St Michael’s keeper Mark Anthony McGinley – that sparked a revival in his side.
It was Daniel McLaughlin who kept St Michael’s alive, knocking over free after free to keep their hopes alive.
Those hopes would then become more than just that when Colin McFadden struck the back of the net for St Michael’s, and just minutes later Carlos McGinley scored their second goal – that saw them shockingly turn the tables and grab the most unlikely of leads.
Patrick McBrearty levelled the sides for Kilcar, but it was an injury-time point from Michael McGinley that saw St Michael’s through to the Semi-Finals of the Donegal Senior Football Championships.
