A verdict is expected to be delivered in October in the trial of an Indian man accused of killing Buncrana woman Danielle McLaughlin.
28-year-old Danielle was raped and murdered in Canacoa, Goa, India in March of 2017 after visiting the region for the popular Holi festival.
Local man Vikat Bhagat has been accused of her murder and rape, and has been in Police custody on and off for the last seven years due to constant delays in his trial.
That trial has been ongoing for seven years, an agonising wait for Danielle’s family who have been forced to wait to find out if they can get justice.
However, a recent development now may finally bring the case to a close.
After yet another request to delay the trial, the High Court of Bombay has ordered a verdict to be delivered by October 17th according to the Irish Mirror.
This means the trial legally cannot be delayed again, and finally there seems to be a finish line in sight for Danielle’s family, and her mother Andrea Brannigan.
She told the Irish Mirror that she was “still in shock” at the news of a conclusion date being set, and that she was “anxious about the verdict but… also glad it is finally coming to an end.”
