Two pupils from St Mura’s NS, Tooban, were celebrating last week as they triumphed in the annual ‘Have You Got Maths Eyes?’ photography competition.
Penn Flood and Eimear Devlin were awarded the prize of overall winners in their respective U7 and U14 categories, having been shortlisted earlier this year.
Both entries were praised for their creativity and clever use of maths. This competition is part of the wider ‘Maths Eyes’ philosophy which challenges children to make connections to the abundance of maths in their everyday lives and spot evidence with their ‘Maths Eyes’.
The awards ceremony was held at the Department of Education and Skills, Marlborough Street in Dublin last Wednesday. While Eimear was unable to attend, Penn received his award from Minister of Education, Norma Foley.
Both pupils were subsequently honoured by their peers at St. Mura’s on Friday. The staff, students and wider school community are extremely proud of their achievement.
School principal Mr. Rory Reynolds commented: “Huge congratulations to Penn and Eimear who won awards at the ‘Have You Maths Eyes’ ceremony recently in Dublin. The children and school were acknowledged for their achievements in developing a positive approach and discovering a new perspective on maths, which is all around us in our daily life. Thank you to all the staff and, in particular to Mr Grant, who organised the competition within the school”.
