Gardaí in Donegal are urging people to be wary of bogus callers operating in local communities.
It follows recent reports in Churchill where men in a white van were calling to homes and offering to do roof repairs and powerwashing.
“While there, they also enquired about items on the properties in question and whether or not these items were for sale,” said Garda Grainne Doherty in a community appeal.
“In light of these reports, we wish to issue a reminder for those with family members who may be susceptible to having bogus callers and rogue traders call to their homes.”
“Such callers may offer services such as powerwashing, painting, selling goods etc. They prefer to target the more vulnerable and people who live alone.”
The advice from gardaí is to not engage with such callers.
Gda Doherty said: “Don’t open your door to anyone before you are confident that they are known to you or that they have a genuine reason to be there. Use a chain lock for added security.
“Bogus callers can be intimidating and often refuse to take no for an answer.
“Contact Gardaí immediately should you encounter such a caller and try to give as much information as possible, description of person, registration number, direction of travel etc.
“We ask you to be vigilant when out and about and report suspicious activity/vehicles/callers to us immediately.”
