St Eunan’s GAA club and Naomh Conaill have paid tribute to one of their greatest supporters, Connie Maguire.
Mr Maguire, of Lismonaghan and formerly of Glenties, passed peacefully at his home on Thursday.
An accomplished player with Naomh Conaill, Connie won a minor championship with Naomh Conaill in 1962, a junior championship in 1964 and was a member of our senior team that competed in the county final in 1965.
He also won an Ulster minor league medal in 1962 with the Donegal Minors.
Leaving his hometown in the 1960s to work for the ESB in Letterkenny, Connie then became involved with the St Eunans club where he was an active member.
Connie fulfilled many roles in the club throughout the decades, including Club Chairman. He had attended a meeting at O’Donnell Park as recently as Wednesday.
“We have lost another great St Eunan’s man who has left a remarkable legacy of volunteerism to our club for almost 60 years,” a spokesperson said.
“He was our Co Board delegate along with his neighbour and great friend Charlie Mc Ateer for more years than we can remember. Connie was a respected delegate and his option was always valued and he wasn’t afraid to ask the hard questions,” the St Eunan’s tribute said.
“It’s fair to say that we wouldn’t have the great facilities at O’Donnell Park today without the commitment of Connie Maguire who was central to the redevelopments in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and was a proud man when Inter County football returned to the Park in 2007.
“Connie took great pride in how well O’Donnell Park looked and was always about the Park helping to do whatever job needed doing. He was a great supporter of all our teams and was at the recent SFC game against Gweedore.”
Condolences have been expressed from across the GAA community and from former colleagues to Connie’s wife Ursula, his daughters Michelle, Caroline, Joanne, his brothers, sisters and all the extended family.
