Works on the Convent Road Active Travel Scheme in Letterkenny are due to continue until the end of 2024.
The project, which involves narrowing the road for pedestrian and cycle facilities, has caused major traffic issues with the reopening of schools in recent weeks.
Thousands of students are navigating the works as they attend the local schools, including Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Scoil Cholmcille National School, St Eunan’s College, and Loreto Secondary School.
An update from Donegal County Council this week said that construction works so far have been focused between Westhill road junction and the Cathedral One Way system “to minimise disruption to the schools in the area”.
The majority of the works in this section are expected to be completed by the end of September.
Works will then be focussed between the Junction with the R250 at Skittle Alley and the Westhill Road Junction.
“It is programmed that these works will be completed before the end of the year,” the update said.
