Donegal County Council has been urged to do more to stop people removing sand from beaches by the lorry-load.
Activity at Dooey Beach on the Rosguill Peninsula is “harming the ecology and geography of this important natural amenity”, warns Independent Councillor Declan Meehan.
Cllr Meehan told a meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District that residents have been complaining for years about heavy plant machinery removing huge amounts of sand from the beach.
Fine Gael Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh, who seconded the motion, said it was concerning if material is being lifted on an industrial scale.
Cllr Meehan’s motion was passed, asking the council to take all measures within its capability to prevent the removal of beach material at Dooey Beach and to review the legislation covering the removal of natural materials from beaches across the county, as well as its enforcement.
