A new proposal has been made to name the performance area in the Letterkenny Town Park in memory of the late musician, Ted Ponsonby.
A trailblazing musician and artist, Ted sadly passed away last September.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh has said it would be a fitting legacy to dedicate the new cultural area to Ted and to provide a canopy cover to encourage its use.
Speaking to the Letterkeny-Milford Municipal District, Cllr Kavanagh said that Ted, formerly of Oldtown, dedicated practically his whole life to music and helping other young musicians in the area. A multi-genre musician, his career spanned more than 6 decades and he also lent his talents to performing at events for various causes.
“Naming the area in his honour would be a tribute greatly appreciated,” Cllr Kavanagh said. “Ted was a Letterkenny man through and through, and I’m sure it would be appreciated by his wife Maryline and daughter Sarah.”
The Outdoor Performance Area was completed this year as part of the redevelopment of Bernard McGlinchey Town Park.
Cllr Kavanagh said he believed that naming the area would also kick-start greater use of the performance area, with the hope that Ted’s family and peers would be keen to play there.
He added that Ted was also a gifted artist, and he hoped the space would also be used for art gatherings.
With support for the proposal agreed by councillors, the local authority said it will consult with the Council’s Parks Section on the official naming. The council also committed to explore funding options to provide a canopy facility.
