A new report has revealed that two thirds of students say they will leave Donegal after completing their second level studies.
In a recent survey, conducted by the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU), key insights have been uncovered regarding the harmful effects of not having sustainable, reliable and affordable transportation in rural communities.
It was carried out among 470 students from different areas of Donegal.
A total of 63.3% of the respondents on average said that they don’t see themselves staying in the county after secondary school.
Over half, 54.1%, believe that they have been affected by the standard of transportation in Donegal.
The vast majority, 93.2%, strongly agree that Donegal needs trains for a more reliable and environmentally friendly transport.
Cassie Lambe, Donegal Regional ISSU Officer, is the author of the report titled ‘Donegal Transport Report: The Forgotten County Active Transportation in Rural Areas’.
“The Irish government prided itself on the mission ‘a better quality of life for all’, they have disappointed their quote, as well as the residents of Donegal, and I hope that this report will materialise and get the conversation started,” she said.
