Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty has visited the controversial Leinster House bike shelter to highlight it as a case of gross overspending.
The now-famous bike shelter, which was built at a cost of €336K has been slammed as an “utter waste of taxpayers’ money.”
Deputy Doherty took the opportunity to contract the expense against Sinn Féin’s new housing plan.
Within the plan are ambitions to deliver 50,000 affordable homes delivered by Local Authorities and Approved Housing Bodies. Half for purchase at prices from €250,000 and half to rent at prices averaging at €1000 per month.
Speaking outside Leinster House today, Deputy Doherty said: “This week, we in Sinn Féin have shown how we would deliver affordable housing at costs of less than €300,000. Yet this shelter being built at prices in excess of that is outrageous.
“Not only are the government overseeing the most expensive hospital in the world, they are now overseeing the most expensive bike shelter in the world.”
Deputy Doherty added; “Questions must be answered, and the OPW must be reigned in from their continued waste of taxpayers money!”
