A 28-year-old man is to appear in court in Derry this morning charged with the murder and rape at the weekend of a Spanish national.
Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team, investigating the murder of 65-year-old Montserrat Martorell in Derry on Saturday, have also charged the man with arson with intent to endanger life.
He is expected to appear before Derry Magistrates’ Court today for a first remand hearing.
As is normal procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
The body of Ms Martorell was found in the early hours of last Saturday morning at a flat in Derry’s Harvey Street.
Detectives said Ms Martorell had been the victim of a “brutal and savage attack”.
