A woman in her eighties has died in hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a two-car crash in south Donegal at the weekend.
Elizabeth Cave (née Coburn) of St Ernan’s, Donegal town, passed away earlier today at Sligo University Hospital. The collision occurred before 9am between Inver Bridge and the turnoff to Ardaghey on the main N56 Killybegs road.
A man (50s) and a woman (40s) were also taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening.
Mrs Cave was well known in the community and there is much shock and sadness following the news of her death.
Her death was announced in a post on the Facebook page of the family business, Cavern Design.
“Our beloved mother, Elizabeth Cave, has passed away following injuries sustained in a tragic accident at Inver last Sunday. Cavern Design Printing is closed now until next Monday. House private please.”
Predeceased by her husband Stephen and brother John, she is survived by daughters Sarah (Bob), Vera (Mike), Rachel (Tony) and son Richard (Louise). She is also deeply missed by her sisters Marion Burgess and Eleanor Hort and brother James Coburn, nieces and nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours.
Funeral arrangements to follow.
This is the eleventh death on Donegal’s roads so far this year, compared to a total number of ten fatalities for all of last year.
Mrs Cave becomes the third person to die in what was a tragic weekend on Donegal roads.
Cousins Kían Dawson-Kirk and Eoghán Dawson lost their lives after the car in which they were travelling struck a wall and ended up in a field at Cross in Quigley’s Point on Saturday night.
Kían, 16, died at the scene and Eoghán, 20, passed away yesterday afternoon from his injuries at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
