The HSE has confirmed that a new GP has been appointed for Ardara Health Centre.
Dr Charles McManus will take up the position tomorrow.
The Glenties-based former Donegal GAA team doctor will replace the well-liked Dr Mireille Sweeney who announced her resignation in June from the medical practice.
She cited the difficulties of working in a ‘single-handed’ GP surgery as part of her decision to move on, after many failed attempts to bring more doctors to the area to assist her, and eventually take over her role.
In a statement released a short-time ago, the HSE wished Dr McManus well in his new role. “This is really good news for the area at a time when GP recruitment can be extremely difficult across the country,” a HSE spokesperson said.
“The HSE would also like to assure patients in Lettermacaward that there will be no changes to the current service arrangements in place for them. Finally the HSE would like to wish Dr Mireille Sweeney a long and happy retirement.”
The surgery in Ardara will be closed tomorrow to allow for the transfer from Dr Sweeney to Dr McManus. In the case of an acute medical emergency, patients should contact 074 9544147 for medical advice or NoWDOC after 6pm.
