The HSE are understood to be very close to announcing a successor to Ardara GP Dr Mireille Sweeney.
Dr Sweeney announced earlier this year that she planned to leave the HSE.
The French national, who has been working locally for almost 30 years, cited an inability to bring other doctors into the practice as one of her reasons for resigning.
Tomorrow will be her last day as a GP at the Health Centre in Ardara.
“After 29 years as a GP in Ardara, it is with a heavy heart that I have handed my resignation to the HSE, my employer,” Mirielle said in a statement.
“For years I have highlighted to the HSE the looming manpower crisis that single handed rural GPs are facing, while also proposing practical solutions to these problems.
“Schemes introduced in recent years by the HSE aimed at improving patient care although highly successful have put huge additional demands on any single-handed GP practice.”
These demands, and the inability of the HSE to find other GPs to fill open roles – including her own role as Principal GP – led to her decision.
In recent weeks local TDs including Pearse Doherty and Thomas Pringle have criticised the HSE for not making an announcement on Dr Sweeney’s successor.
However, it is understood the HSE will issue a statement very shortly.
It is understood a contract will be offered to a GP who will take over as Dr Sweeney’s successor.
