A dog has been safely rescued after falling off a cliff in south west Donegal.

The farm dog was saved after a seven-hour rescue mission in the Glenlough Bay area yesterday.

Killybegs Coast Guard were tasked to the area by Malin Head Coast Guard shortly after 1pm on Monday.

Concerns were raised that someone might attempt to rescue the dog themselves, prompting a swift response from the coast guard team.

After a one-and-a-half-hour hike to the location, the team set up specialised climbing equipment to safely retrieve the stranded dog. The operation concluded successfully at 8.30pm.

“We want to thank both the farmers for helping us transport all our climbing gear to and from the location,” a spokesperson said.

“We also thank the farmer who owned the dog who made the correct decision in making the call to the coastguard for assistance.”

“A very successful climbing call out by all members.”
