Yesterday was a day of immense pride for Conor McDermott from Drumkeen after a week of ‘keeping her lit’ on a mammoth 550km cycle!
Conor’s symbolic journey was inspired by his wife Elaine, who underwent cancer treatment over the past two years.
The Pedal4Cancer route stretched from Derry (Altnagelvin Hospital) to Galway (University Hospital) and finishing at Cancer Care West Letterkenny.
“This cycle trek represents a journey Elaine and I made a number of times in 2022 and 2023 as Elaine went through her cancer journey,” Conor said.
“Thankfully Elaine is now a cancer survivor so this is a way to acknowledge and promote the services and supports across Galway, Letterkenny and Altnagelvin that enabled that outcome and in particular the services of Cancer Care West.”
The journey also highlights the logistical hurdles and challenges that a Donegal cancer patient goes through on their treatment journey.
This week, Elaine was an unwavering source of guidance and motivation on the cycle challenge as she drove alongside Conor in a DMG Motors sponsored hire van.
Conor returned to a hero’s welcome through Drumkeen yesterday afternoon as friends and family turned out to cheer him on his last leg.
The St. Mary’s Convoy coach and clubman has raised almost €7,000 through online donations, while generating extra support and awareness for the vital services of Cancer Care West.
