Laghey’s Kelly McGrory still can’t believe that she’s in an Olympic final.
The Tir Connaill AC athlete shared her delight after a sensational run in the Women’s 4x400m Relay semi-finals in Paris this morning.
The team clocked 3:25.05, coming third in their heat at Stade de France.
This is the first time the women’s relay team has made a final at the Olympic Games.
And it’s all the more sweet as it’s McGrory’s first Olympic games.
The Donegal woman told RTE Sport: “I knew it was going to take a brave run to get out in front and not get caught up in any mess.
“If you want to execute the race you just have to be brave at the start.
“I just can’t believe we’re saying it, we’re in the final!”
McGrory had the third leg and went out strong in the first 200m, wanting to stay in front of the pack, but did lose some ground.
“I definitely paid for it in the second half but I knew when I was passing over to Sharlene that we were in good hands,” she said.
“It’s what dreams are made of,” added teammate Phil Healy (Bandon AC).
Later on, Finn Valley AC’s Mark English missed out on a place in the men’s 800m final after a sixth-place finish in his semi-final heat.
