Portsalon Pier finally reopened to the public in time for the Bank Holiday weekend following a €1.425M refurbishment project.
The main contractor removed safety barriers to allow full access on Friday afternoon. The works were due to be completed last April, however, they were beset by a number of delays. The structure was also badly damaged during last winter’s storm.
According to one local, footfall to the area had dropped since the pier initially closed in July last year.
The shop at the crossroads didn’t reopen this year and neither did the pier restaurant,” they said.
“The shop at the pier has remained open throughout this time. Hopefully now that the pier is open, people will start to return to this beautiful area.”
They added that the pier is vitally important to the local economy.
