Gates at Government buildings in Dublin were damaged last night after they were struck by a van.
The van driver, a man in his 40s, has been arrested and is being held at a garda station in Dublin.
Gardai have launched an investigation following the incident in which at least three gates including that of the Department of the Taoiseach, were damaged in the early hours of this morning.
Gates beside the Office of the Attorney General were badly damaged.
The gate at the entrance of Leinster House on Merrion Street was also damaged.
A number of streets around Government Buildings have been sealed off by gardaí.
Gardaí said they were alerted to the incident at around 2.30am.
A white van was seen being towed away from the area this morning.
