Donegal Half Marathon Ambassador, Danny McDaid, believes the highlighting of the New Mills Corn and Flax Mills in this year’s race will help promote its historical significance.
The attraction, located at New Mills on the outskirts of Letterkenny, has been selected as the centrepiece for the finishers’ medal by the organising committee.
“People don’t realise how much history is attached to New Mills,” commented Danny, whose home is located next to the well-known tourist attraction.
“It was the hub of Glenswilly back in the day. Friday was always the big day at the mill as it was shopping day – a bit like how the people from the area come to Kernan’s at Tullygay now. As a child, I can remember the corn mill and the big water wheel which is quite amazing. Anybody that is coming to the area should pay it a visit, because the history of the mill is unbelievable,” the double Olympian added.
The Donegal Half Marathon Committee has been working closely with Fáilte Ireland to highlight iconic sites along the Wild Atlantic Way. Over the last three years, Malin Head, Sliabh Liag and Fanad Lighthouse have been on the t-shirts and medals.
“We’ve developed a great partnership with Fáilte Ireland with the aim of promoting the various signature points along the Wild Atlantic Way in our own county. It’s something different and provides those taking part in the event with a collectors’ item,” Danny added.
This year’s race takes place on Sunday, August 25th in Letterkenny at 9.20 am, with headquarters based at the Aura Leisure Centre.
