The famous Sweeney’s Hotel in Dungloe finally reopened its doors to the public this week.
The official honours were performed by former MEP, TD, and upcoming General Election hopeful, Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher, with Daniel O’Donnell also making an appearance.
The hotel dates back to the 1850s when it was opened by John D Sweeney who made his fortune in the US. However, it had lain derelict for a number of years before builder and developer Pat Boyle, and his Chicago-based businessman cousin Kevin Boyle, embarked on a €2 million refurbishment.
The pair began the ambitious redevelopment works in 2020 and featured in RTE’s At Your Service with John and Francis Brennan in 2022.
Pat Boyle said he was delighted to finally have the job completed in time for the Mary From Dungloe Festival.
Five rooms in the original part of the hotel were named after people associated with the area – Daniel O’Donnell, Margo, Moya Brennan, Packie Bonner and the late Gay Byrne.
