Donegal barristers to protest in Buncrana today over pay issue

July 24, 2024

Donegal barristers will today host a protest outside Buncrana Courthouse over levels of pay.

It is part of a nationwide withdrawal of services at eleven courts across the country.

It is the third day of three days of withdrawal of services by barristers this month.

This is an escalation on the unprecedented action taken by criminal barristers all over the country last October.

The full range of FEMPI-era cuts that were applied across the public sector continue to apply to the profession and the unilateral breaking of the link to public sector pay agreements has yet to be restored.

While members of Government and the Opposition have signalled support for fee restoration, no commitment has yet been given regarding a timeline, despite a government report as far back as 2018 stating that fee restoration was justified, given the reforms and flexibilities provided by profession.

Protests will take place at eleven courthouses on Wednesday including:

Donegal (Buncrana)
Carlow
The Four Courts, Dublin
Clare (Ennis)
Cork City (Washington St.)
Kildare (Naas)
Kilkenny
Limerick (Merchants Quay)
Longford
Sligo
Tipperary (Clonmel)
