Una McGettigan has been remembered as a “generous and gentle person” who dedicated herself to caring for others.
She was laid to rest at the Church of St John the Baptist, Carrigart this afternoon.
Her funeral mass came just hours after the funeral of her brother PJ in Termon.
Both of them tragically died following a road traffic accident in Kilmacrennan earlier this week.
Una was remembered by Carrigart parish priest, Fr Charles Byrne, as someone who dedicated her life to caring for others.
“The McGettigan family have suffered a great loss. It has caused a darkness to descend on us all. We all feel their loss, and support them.”
“Una sent her regards some time back with prayers for my recovery to full health. We has a long chat about many different things, including her concern for her brother PJ and his health, and you can imagine that I too, like so many of you am struggling to comprehend what happened. Why. How.”
“During her work time, she also cared for her mother in later life, and for her aunt Brigid. She also cared for other relations.”
“She was a kind, a generous and a gentle person. Those qualities served her well in this vocation as a carer.”
“Her sudden death, and that of her brother PJ brings home to us how fleeting life is, how precarious is the hold that we have on it. Life, taken in the twinkling of an eye, brings home the fragility of it, and how precious is the treasure that we carry in earthen vessels.”
“Tragic death, which is almost always sudden, is a blackout. It plunges us into inpenetrable darkness. All we are left with is our faith. Una had faith, in abundance. If death surprised Una with its suddenness, may Christ now surprise her with his mercy and kindness.”
