Donegal County Council has been asked to consider providing a home ground for the Letterkenny Cricket Club on council-owned lands adjacent to the river Swilly and the Neil T. Blaney Road.
The idea was put forward by Councillor Michael McBride, who said the plains of the Swilly would be an ideal location for a new sports ground.
Although the ground would need “extensive work”, Cllr McBride pointed out that most of the sports facilities in Letterkenny lie on the same plain.
In May, the Letterkenny Cricket Club handed a petition with 600 signatures to Donegal County Council in their plea to be granted a pitch of its own. The club, which was established in 2016, has won a number of cups. However, since its establishment, club members have to make a two hour, 40-mile round trip to Drummond cricket ground near Limavady. LCC has also had to withdraw its Midweek Team due to St Johnston cricket ground, which had been kindly granted on a part-time basis, no longer being available.
“They need a place they can call home,” Cllr McBride told this week’s sitting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
“The Letterkenny Cricket Club are fielding four adult teams at the moment. Practising now has become a big problem for them.”
Cllr McBride’s motion asked for a master plan for Donegal County Council owned lands adjacent to the river Swilly and the Neil T Blaney road to be carried out as soon as possible, with a view to meeting the needs of LCC.
The motion was adopted, with the executive agreeing to “explore the best mechanism to deliver on the request”.
