Donegal County Council is exploring options to fix a disabled parking space in Letterkenny town centre that currently lacks a dropped kerb, rendering it unusable for wheelchair users.
Problems with a parking space on Oliver Plunkett Road, opposite the County Library, were highlighted to the council at the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting yesterday by Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh.
Speaking on behalf of both library staff and library users, Cllr Kavanagh explained that wheelchair users are forced to travel out onto the busy road to access the nearest dropped kerbs.
“Where there’s a disabled parking spot and the kerb isn’t dropped, it renders it pretty useless,” said Cllr Kavanagh.
While initial reports suggest significant works may be needed at the current location, Roads Engineer David McIlwaine presented a potentially easier solution.
After examining the area, Mr McIlwaine said the easier solution may involve swapping the disabled parking space with the existing bus stop, which would allow for a ramp to be installed at the top of the layby.
Funding will be sought to carry out the necessary alterations.
