A kayaker was rescued from the sea yesterday after their kayak overturned off the coast of Gaoth Dobhair.
The alarm was raised on Sunday evening when Malin Coast Guard Station issued a call-out to Bunbeg Coast Guard to locate a kayaker in distress southwest of Inishsirrer Island.
The Bunbeg CG team launched within minutes of the tasking and arrived on the scene to find an individual clinging to their overturned kayak in the water.
The team swiftly rescued the individual and recovered the kayak before safely transporting both to Bunaninver Harbour. The kayaker did not require medical attention.
Following the incident, the Coast Guard has issued a message urging caution and safe planning when doing watersports.
“We’d like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the importance of carrying a means of communication when visiting the coastline or when on the water,” a spokesperson for Bunbeg CG said.
“And remember, if you see someone in distress along the coast or in the water, or think they might be; Dial 999 or 112 and asked for the Coast Guard.”
