Gardaí are investigating possible Donegal links to an incident where a gang was shot at during a burglary in County Mayo this week.
The incident took place near Ballyhaunis in County Mayo on Thursday – where a farmer opened fire on a gang that had been attempting to steal from one of his properties.
No one was injured, but two shots fired from a shotgun caused enough damage to the gang’s silver getaway van that it had to be abandoned just a kilometre away from the farm house where the incident took place.
It’s understood that the registration plate on the van is from Donegal, and that the gang may have links to criminal activities in Dublin.
An armed Garda response unit was quickly deployed to the farmhouse, but the suspects had already fled the vehicle.
Appeals have been made for witnesses, and Gardaí say they have already identified one of the main suspects in the case.
