A local Councillor in the Glenties area wants more to be done to control the badger population in Donegal.
Cllr Michael McClafferty made the calls after a number of motorists in West Donegal reported hitting badgers that had been crossing the road.
He also says that farmers are being impacted heavily by badgers spreading TB to herds in the area.
Cllr McClafferty says he wants something to be done about the badger population “…ue to the increase of TB locally in the Glenties area for cattle farmers, which has huge knock on effects such as unable to sell untill the heard becomes clear.”
“Sometimes this (process) can be drawn out causing huge stress on all including the cows when it happens.”
He also says the badgers cause a serious risk to motorists, and that they are being spotted close to populated towns.
“When I see badgers getting knocked down it highlights another danger for our motorists.”
“These boys would wreck a car as they are built like tanks but the public need to be aware in no circumstances these animals are not pets. They are dangerous (so) once I see them close to towns that’s alarming.”
Cllr McClafferty also wants to remind farmers to take steps to protect their herds.
“Drinking bowls etc should be at least 30 inches high to avoid badgers washing themselves in the bowls, or worse urinating in them causing TB to spread locally.”
