XL Bully dogs are set to be banned in Ireland later this year.
The ban comes after a number of high-profile dog attacks in recent months, including one where a 23-year-old woman in Limerick was killed after being attacked by a XL Bully.
New measures to control the dogs are set to be formally announced by Minister Heather Humphreys later today.
The new regulations are expected to be introduced in two phases, the first beginning in October when Government will make it illegal to breed, sell, rehome or import XL Bully dogs in Ireland.
Phase two of the plan will see owning an XL Bully dog banned entirely on the 1st of February 2025, unless the owner has a certificate of exemption for the animal.
These certificates will only be issued if the dog is neutered, microchipped, and the owner has a special dog licence.
Anyone who owns an XL Bully and does not follow the new rules may have their dog seized and euthanised under the new law.
