A local business in Donegal Town is calling for the return of biker parking on the renovated Diamond despite the area’s designation as pedestrian-only.
The Donegal Town Diamond reopened for pedestrians only at the end of June following extensive works.
However, the biker community and local businesses are appealing for a change of policy to restore the atmosphere and economic impact on the town centre.
“Bring back the bikers,” said Simple Simon’s in an online post.
“While we were delighted to see the Diamond reopening last week we are saddened that bikes have been banned from this area now.
“Donegal Town has always been a hub for bikers, most of who are great customers of ours and bring a lot of business to our town.
“Usually on a Sunday afternoon the Diamond is thronged with people, bikers, families, visitors etc. This photo (above) was taken 10 minutes ago. A very quiet Sunday afternoon by comparison.”
The debate rumbled on across social media in recent days, while Donegal County Council issued an appeal to users of cars, vans, motorbikes (or any mechanically propelled vehicle) to park in the car parks nearby.
A spokesperson said: “Everyone is welcome to congregate and meet on the Diamond, but please do so on foot.
“Vehicular access is not allowed on the centre of the Diamond and the local community and visitors are asked to support and co-operate with this direction.”
The Diamond has been designated as a pedestrian zone in the interests of health and safety, the council said, as well as ensuring the maximum enjoyment for all users of the space. This is also important to protect the space from damage and to keep it as clean as possible.
“New pedestrian signage will be placed on the Diamond in the coming days and a traffic warden will be in the area over the weekend to ensure users are aware that this is a pedestrian zone only and to encourage them to abide by this direction,” the spokesperson said.
