A councillor has said the longtime closure of a walkway through the scenic Drumboe Woods ‘cannot go on any longer.’
Cllr Martin Harley made the call in a motion that is to go before tomorrow’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).
“I am calling on the Senior Engineer for this Municipal District to contact the contractor for the extension to the Finn Valley College immediately to ensure the walkway adjacent to the college is opened as soon as possible,” his motion read.
“This has been closed for 12 years to the public and this cannot go on any longer.”
At the last MD meeting in May, councillors were informed that the gateway from the college to the woods would have to remain locked during planned construction works for health and safety reasons.
Cllr Patrick McGowan said it was the Donegal Education and Training Board (ETB) that was preventing the gate from being opened, calling it an ‘absolute disgrace’.
Council engineer, Adrian McCool, told the meeting he couldn’t understand why an extension within the ETB site could have anything to do with the walkway.
“We extended the path with the cooperation of Coillte, right up to the school, but the gates are still locked,” Mr McCool said.
