Man appears in Donegal court over assault of another man

July 6, 2024

A man who due to be extradited to Scotland in connection with a serious assault of a man with a brick has been refused bail after being charged with a violent assault in Sligo.

Richard Sharples, a 24-year-old of Doonbeakin, Templeboy, Sligo, was brought before Judge Sandra Murphy at Ballyshannon District Court on Friday.

Sharples is charged that at Ballyeasken, Templeboy, Sligo, on July 3, 2024 that he assaulted one Steven Connelly causing him harm.

The charge is contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997

Sharples appeared with both of his arms in plaster and heavily bandaged.

Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Sharples was given to the court by way of schedule.

Detective Garda Joanne Holohan told the court that An Garda Siochana was objecting to bail, citing the nature and the degree of seriousness of the offences, the strength of evidence and the sentence likely to be imposed upon conviction.

The court heard that Sharples is currently on High Court bail, a condition of which is that he is to be of good behaviour.

Barrister for Sharples, Ms Catherine Henry, instructed by Tracy Horan & Company Solicitors, applied for bail on behalf of her client.

Ms Henry said Sharples has co-operated in the matter and that he has abided by the conditions of his bail.

The court was informed that Sharples has ADHD and autism and is on medication.

“He will give an undertaking that he will comply with conditions,” Ms Henry said. “He is willing to comply and would be better served by being allowed to continue treatments.”

A medical report from a psychologist was handed into the court.

Judge Murphy said that the High Court had set down “strenuous conditions” on Sharples who has an extradition matter for an alleged serious offence.

Judge Murphy said that Sharples has the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and this was “front and centre of my mind”.

Noting that Sharples is also on a suspended sentence for a previous matter and with regard to the High Court bail terms, Judge Murphy refused bail.

Sharples was remanded in custody and Judge Murphy directed that he be medically assessed while in prison.

Sharples was embraced by family members before being led away by detectives.

He is to appear again before Sligo District Court on July 11 by video link.

In April at the High Court, Ms Justice Melanie Greally ordered Sharples’ extradition.

Sharples is wanted for prosecution by Glasgow Sheriff Court under a Trade and Cooperation arrest warrant for two offences alleged to have occurred at Cardona Street, Glasgow.

He is wanted in connection with a firearms offence and a serious assault that endangered the life of another man, offences that are alleged to have occurred in Glasgow on September 16,, 2021.

Ms Justice Greally granted bail on an approved surety of €20,000.

It is alleged that he launched an attack on an injured party in Glasgow by using a brick, gouging his eyes, punching and kicking him repeatedly and stamping on his head.
