Man to stand trial on money laundering charges

A man has appeared in court charged under the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act.

Othniel Matondo appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

The 23-year-old is charged with a number of offences.

Detective Garda Gerard McCready told the court that he arrested and cautioned Matondo at 12.18pm at Letterkenny Courthouse on Monday last, July 1st.

Detective McCready said that when charged, the accused made no reply to any of the charges.

Among the charges, Matondo is charged that on April 16th, 2020 at a place within the State, did engage in converting, transferring, handling, acquiring, possessing or using property that is the proceeds of criminal conduct, to wit €2,990 that was credited to his Revolut account.

The charge is Contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice Money Laundering & Terrorist Financing) Act.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that trial would be by indictment at Letterkenny Circuit Court commencing on October 21st.

The accused man’s solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client was already signing on for other matters and bail was granted.

Legal aid was also granted.
