Scammers taking advantage of the demand for Taylor Swift tickets have been targeting Facebook users in Donegal, it has emerged.
More and more accounts been compromised by hackers promoting fake ticket sales for this weekend’s gigs.
With limited tickets released for the Dublin dates of the Eras Tour last night, there are fears that more people will fall victim to the scams.
The scam involves hackers posting from a genuine person’s Facebook account, claiming to sell four tickets for the Aviva gig on Saturday night. Users have reported receiving private messages from friends asking about codes also.
However, hundreds of hacked accounts across the country have been selling the same seats with the same wording on their posts.
See an example here:
“They are very easy to be caught out by,” said one Facebook user. “I almost fell for it because I knew the person, but something about their messages seemed off.
“It was only when other people commented ‘scam’ that I got the warning signs. Thankfully I didn’t offer any money yet.
“People need to be extra careful because you would trust someone that you are friends with on Facebook, but the scammers are getting smarter. They know how hard these tickets are to find.
“A little word of warning is to watch out for wording – the fake posts all seem to say ‘HMU (hit me up) if you’re interested’.”
The advice from gardaí is to only purchase tickets from recognised sources, ie. Ticketmaster.
