A huge consignment of illegal tobacco and cigarettes seized by Revenue officers at Dublin Port was intended to be delivered to an address in Donegal.
The tobacco and cigarettes, worth an estimated €220,000, were seized on Tuesday last.
The illegal contraband was discovered in a consignment of jigsaw puzzles which had originated from Poland.
The consignment was seized thanks to the nose of sniffer dog Waffle.
The illegal haul consisted of 210 kgs of tobacco, branded ‘Virginia’, with an estimated value of €173,100, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €130,000, 40,000 cigarettes, branded ‘John Player’, with an estimated value of €33,500, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €26,300.
Investigations into the seizure is ongoing.
No details of the address in Co Donegal where the tobacco or cigarettes were destined for have been disclosed.
However, it is understood that Revenue and Gardai are carrying out a full investigation into all aspects of the find.
The seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the importation of illegal drugs and the sale and supply of illegal tobacco products.
