Glenswilly National School bid a heartfelt adieu today to two esteemed teachers, Mrs Geraldine Galligan and Mrs Kate Mc Teague, who are retiring with a combined 73 years of service.
Deputy Principal Mrs Galligan and Mrs Mc Teague rang the school bell for the final time at a special assembly this morning to signify the end of class and the start of their new adventures.
Donegal Senior star Oisin Gallen brought the Anglo Celt cup along for the occasion, where he was joined by Glenswilly and Donegal GAA legend and past-pupil Neil Gallagher for student presentations.
Music, poetry, and memories unfolded throughout the morning. The spotlight shone on the retiring teachers’ unwavering encouragement of pupils, their grace and kindness shown to new staff members, and their transformative impact as Special Education Teachers (SETs) in recent years.
Mrs Galligan’s 34 years at Glenswilly NS were marked by her passion for the arts. She ignited a spark in budding artists, writers, actors, and musicians, inspiring them to strive for success in competitions. Mrs Galligan spent 34 years of her 36-year teaching career at ‘The Glen’, having also taught in Glenties and Letterkenny. She stepped into the role of Deputy Principal 12 years ago, where her leadership and dedication have been described as “a guiding light for both students and colleagues alike”.
Mrs Galligan’s influence extended far beyond the classroom walls. No stranger to the stage, Geraldine shines often in leading roles with the Letterkenny Music and Drama Group. She also used her voice to advocate for the school and ensure the government delivered improved facilities where needed.
Mrs McTeague’s passion for the Irish language and culture is contagious in Glenswilly NS, according to the staff tributes. Her enthusiasm for the annual Féis in Letterkenny was legendary, often returning laden with medals.
Beyond academics, Mrs Mc Teague was known for her beautiful handwriting, her zest for life and travel… and her delicious pavlovas and cheesecakes! Her dedication to inclusivity was evidenced by her transition to special education.
Ms McTeague retires with 37 years of service and there’s no doubt her vibrant spirit and dedication to personal growth will continue strong.
The retirement celebration doubled as an end-of-year assembly, showcasing the school’s 2024 achievements in GAA, debating, Allingham Arts Festival competitions for art, poetry, short-story writing and more.
While they will be dearly missed, Mrs Galligan and Mrs Mc Teague leave behind a legacy of dedication and inspiration. The Glenswilly NS community extended their heartfelt wishes for a well-deserved retirement filled with adventure, fulfilment, and quality time with loved ones.
A mass to celebrate the retirement of Mrs Galligan and Mrs Mc Teague takes place this evening, Tuesday 25th June at 7.30pm in St Columba’s Church, Glenswilly.
