Gardaí in Donegal have thanked the majority of the public for their compliance and co-operation after an immensely busy Donegal Rally weekend.
“Most of the visitors were law abiding and an absolute pleasure to deal with and we hope you all had a nice weekend,” a spokesperson said as the events came to a close last night.
The weekend saw a major policing operation take place on the roads and streets across the county and across the border in partnership with the PSNI. Garda Reserve members also travelled from near and far to assist.
Road safety, crowd control and public order were among the main targets of gardaí, with many defective vehicles taken off the roads at checkpoints and dangerous driving and speed detections made.
Gardaí maintained a high visibility presence and engaged with motorsport enthusiasts through the popular road safety education initiative ‘Operation Nexus’. The ‘rescued’ VW Golf was spotted across Letterkenny and ‘boy racers’ were invited to check it out and talk to gardaí about what legal modifications could be done. Gardaí have one final safety message to people travelling home after the big weekend: “For those who have yet to travel home, we wish you a safe journey. Drive with care and keep within the speed limits. Do take a break and stop off for a coffee if you are feeling tired. The main thing is that you all get home safely. We hope to see you again in 2025!”
