A sure sign the Donegal International Rally is getting close was the arrival into the county this morning of a fleet of garda motorbikes.
They will form part of a major police operation as tens of thousands of motorsport enthusiasts begin to arrive from this afternoon onwards.
Gardaí will be out in force this weekend and, as always, will be applying a zero tolerance approach in relation to dangerous driving, drink and drug driving and bad driver behaviour in general.
“Any sort of disruptive or antisocial behaviour on or off the roads will not be tolerated,” a garda spokesperson said.
Tonight, the competing rally cars will be put through scrutiny at McGinley Motors on the Pearse Road in Letterkenny. The Ceremonial Start will take place later on the Port Road at 7pm. The drivers briefing starts at 9pm in the An Grianan Theatre.
The rally kicks off tomorrow as stages return to Inishowen for the first time in over a decade.
Should anybody need to contact Gardaí over the course of the rally weekend they can do so on a 24/7 basis at the following Garda Stations: Letterkenny 074-9167100, Ballyshannon 071-9858530, Milford 074-9153060 and Buncrana 074-9320540. As always, in the case of an emergency, please call 999 or 112. Criminal activity can also be reported to the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.
