A Cavan senior footballer has appeared in court charged with assaulting a Donegal man during last year’s Fleadh Cheoil in Westmeath.
Oisin Kiernan (25) of Rockross, Cavan, appeared before Mullingar District Court on Thursday afternoon charged with assault causing harm to Jordan McDaid at Oliver Plunkett Street, Mullingar, on August 8, 2023.
He was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place and of using threatening and abusive behaviour on the same date.
The accused, who plays with the Denn GAA Club, is due to line out for his county against Roscommon in the All-Ireland group stage this afternoon.
When he initially appeared in court last September, Kiernan was charged with public order before reappearing in April where a section 3 assault charge was also issued.
Defence solicitor, Louis Kiernan, sought an adjournment at Thursday’s sitting and said he had expected the alleged victim to be in court.
Garda Sergeant Orla Keenan also said she preferred the alleged injured party to be present.
Judge Bernadette Owens added that the court had yet to decide on jurisdiction as to whether the case can be heard in the District Court or sent to the, higher, Circuit Court.
Kiernan was consequently remanded on bail to a sitting of Mullingar District Court on July 4.
