Students from Coláiste Ailigh in Letterkenny stepped out in style for The Stars of Tomorrow awards for secondary school students in Co. Wexford, last week.
The Letterkenny school’s variety show – Siansa Samhna, was nominated for nine awards in various categories.
Siansa Samhna ran in An Grianán Theatre for 2 nights at the end of October 2023.
The students won a coveted 1st prize in the category ‘Best Live Music Award’ for their performance of ‘Falling Slowing/Grá dom Leonadh’ from the musical Once. The lead singers were lead singers, Mason Ó Giolláin & Eimear Nic Taidhg accompanied by Sadbh Breathnach, Muireann Nic Aoidh, Sorcha Ní Fhríl, Gráinne Ní Fhríl and Conall Ó hEaráin.
James O Cuireáin won 3rd place in the “Best Solo Comedy’ section for his role as Callaghan’s Shop Owner. It was a well deserved award for James who had the audience in stitches during the show.
The students and staff of Coláiste Ailigh were rewarded for their talent & work by securing 2nd prize in the ‘Best Overall Variety Show’ category – this fantastic achievement honoured the entire team who worked so hard to make this show a success.
The awards evening in Gorey was a great success and was modelled on the Oscars.
The students had the opportunity to walk the red carpet. Two of their teachers who directed the show, Marie Uí Thaidhg and Marie Uí Ruadháin, also attended on the night.
Twenty-six schools from across the country received nominations for this inaugural event. A number of students unfortunately could not attend the awards as they were sitting State Exams the following day. The organisers intend to make this an annual event to celebrate the talents of the student population.
