The wonderful Donegal Railway Museum has obtained funding for a number of new developments.
The attraction, in Donegal town (main pic), successfully secured a €9,000 grant to produce a digitalised touch-screen railway map of the entire Donegal railway network. This will be a great addition to the museum, but will take a bit of work compiling information for up to 85 separate locations across the North West. This follows on from the popular Pocket Guide which has been a great success.
Thanks to the Donegal Culture & Creativity Project Awards Scheme, the museum will be able to erect new artefact signage (to go with artefacts recently donated), as well as other general new signage.
“All of this is so important, in order to tell the complete story of the Donegal Railways in an engaging way,” a spokesperson said.
Finally, there was a successful grant application to the Department of Rural & Community Development’s ‘Local Enhancement Programme.’
The funding will go towards the ‘reskin’ of the original County Donegal Railway Coach 58, which has suffered over the years from the elements. Separately, the museum is also replacing the perspex around their famous railway models to improve their visual presentation and viewing experience.
The Donegal Railway Heritage Museum is open Monday – Saturday, 10am-5pm, Sunday 12 noon-4pm (Apr-Sep). The visitor attraction comprises a museum, displays, an original Donegal steam engine, Ireland’s first Interactive Cab, a reference library, unique original rolling stock and a shop and cafe.
