A total of 21 athletes made the journey over two days to the Mary Peters Track in Belfast for the Ulster Championships.
It was to prove a successful weekend with great performances, medals and many qualifications for All Irelands later in the summer. There were so many outstanding performances but special mention to Niamh Doogan for double gold and bronze medals, Elid Duffy for gold and silver, Sheila Gallagher gold and bronze and Micheal Logue for gold and bronze medals. There were also gold medals performances for Aileen Logue (u14 girls high jump), Evan Ward (u14 boys high jump), Eli Duffy (u14 boys javelin), Eva Logue (u16 girls high jump ), Sheila Gallagher (u18 shot putt), Michael Logue (u15 boys hammer), Niamh Doogan (u15 girls Long Jump and 250m Hurdles).
There were silver medals for Eli Duffy (u14 boys discus) and Robyn Duffy (u12 girls 1k walk). Bronze medals went to Leah Ward (u14 shot put), Josh Broadbent (u16 boys javelin), Sheila Gallagher u18 girls discus), Annie O’Neill (u15 girl long jump), Niamh Doogan (u15 girls 80m hurdles) and Michael Logue (u15 boys shot putt). There was an All Ireland qualification for Cianan Greene (u14 boys shot putt). Also strong performances for a number of people returning from injuries, getting back into full training etc with Jack McElroy Tristan Green u15 boys 800m and 1500m, Faela Houston (u15 girls high jump) Leah Ward (u14 girls long jump), Odhran Lynch (u15 boys long jump and 100m) and Annie O Neill (u15 girls 100m).
There was great news this week also with the announcement of selections for Sheila Gallagher and Eva Logue onto the Ulster Schools Interprovincial team that will compete in the Tailteann Games in Santry on Saturday 22nd June. Sheila will compete in the Shot Put while Eva will compete in the High Jump. It’s a fantastic honour to compete at this level. Well done Sheila and Eva.
At the Dingle Adventure Race there was a big win for David McKelvey, proving his toughness on this 73km course which included 55k of cycling a total of 17k running/hiking up and 1km kayak.
At the Letterkenny Gaels 5k, Declan Ferry took the victory in 15:31 and Paul McKelvey in 17:35. At the Aurivo 5k in Killygordon last week, PJ Doogan continued his fine form taking the win in 15:11, Charlie O Donnell 16:12 , Declan Gallagher 17:38 and Denis Boner 21:12. Helen Mc Cready 18:24 in second place, Bernie Boyle 4th 19:13, Cathy Breslin 22:10, Angela Trimble 29:23 and Marie Gallagher 29:27.
