Buncrana’s Jack Murray is feeling the emotions of a winning tally in the Donegal sorting centre this morning.
The Sinn Fein councillor looks well-placed to beat the quota for South Inishowen.
Thanking every voter who gave him a number one, he said: “It’s like a debt that I have to repay for that trust that has been placed in me.”
Taking nothing for granted, Cllr Murray said he knows he has to get back to work on Monday morning.
Joining the Sinn Fein party as a teenager, Murray was first co-opted to Donegal County Council in 2011 to replace Pádraig Mac Lochlainn. He was re-elected in 2014 and elected on the first count in 2019 but has today denied being a potential candidate for Sinn Féin’s general election ticket.
“I’m very happy as a local councillor and that’s where I see my future,” he said.
100% Redress party is set to take two seats in Inishowen, with Ali Farren polling strong in Carndonagh and Joy Beard taking the second highest number of first preference votes in the tally Buncrana.
Murray says the results for both Sinn Féin and 100% Redress show the government has to listen to what is being said in Inishowen.
“It’s a clear message that the schemes, both attempts at it, are failing,” he said.
“Right now the government has taken a kicking here, they need to listen and they need to deliver 100% redress.”
