Ballot boxes will be opened and votes from both the local and European elections will be separated from 9am this morning at the Aura Leisure centre in Letterkenny.
Supporters of the 91 candidates queued from early morning to get into the centre ahead of what is expected to be a long day.
Only those with official passes will be allowed into the centre to see the separation of the ballot papers.
Although official counting does not begin until tomorrow, tally people from the various parties will know how their candidates are doing as they get a quick glimpse of ballot papers when they are being separated.
Once all the votes are separated, they will be put back into their various election count centre boxes and will this evening be sent to those centres.
The official counting at these centres in Carndonagh, Letterkenny, Stranorlar, Donegal Town and Glenties begins tomorrow morning at 9am.
The votes for the European Parliament will be taken to the overall count centre in Castlebar, Co Mayo where counting will also begin tomorrow.
