A young Carndonagh poet has been shining brightly in the literature world after securing two prestigious national awards.
Chloe Doherty, aged 14, is a Carndonagh Community School student with a true talent for weaving words.
Last weekend, Chloe’s poem “Growth and Realisation” impressed the judges at the Listowel Writers’ Week where she clinched the first place prize in the 13-15 yrs Children’s Creative Writing Competition. The ceremony in Kerry was a momentous occasion for Chloe, who travelled down and enjoyed some open mic events.
Just a month prior, Chloe’s work received another distinction. Her poem titled “I’ll Fly You to the Moon” was published in the Irish Times supplement alongside her photo, part of the “Fighting Words” initiative supported by The Arts Council. Read the poem here: www.irishtimes.com
Chloe’s passion for writing began at a young age. At the age of eight, she embarked on her creative journey under the guidance of Grainne McCool’s Spraoi agus Sport program, which fostered her talent through writing classes. Since then, she has honed her skills with The WRITE STUFF, a group that provides Chloe with encouragement and a supportive environment. Grainne, Chloe’s mentor, is immensely proud of her student’s achievements.
Chloe has also had victories in competitions like Read DL and last year’s top prize at the Verval Arts Creative Writing Competition.
Performing her poetry is no hurdle for Chloe. She takes the stage at open mic events and gatherings with confidence.
Having just completed her second year at CCS, Chloe aspires to keep writing and eventually publish a poetry collection of her own. Her parents Eamon and Tracy Doherty couldn’t be prouder and can’t wait to see what the future brings.
